I have 3 or 4 garbage bags full of blankets and bedding, plus some clothing I'd like to donate.

Where can I take it in the San Francisco Bay area so that I know it will reach those in San Diego County or other afflicted areas?

Within the next 48 hours we expect that people affected by the fires will be posting their needs to wishuponahero.com. This site is the perfect way for the fire victims to get immediate and direct help from specific individual from anywhere in the world.

I live in Escondido, CA and we have been on stand by for evacuation since the fire began. The phone lines are jammed and it is hard to get through.
To Maureenaus: Barham was not part of the fire and and don't think they evacuated.
To astar4u: The fire did not reach the coast, so your friends should be fine.
If you want current info. on the fires in the San Diego area, you can check the local news at www.nbcsandiego.com or www.cbs8.com.
Continue to pray for the hundreds that have lost their homes!

If you go to www.calfires.com, a map will come up. The crosses on the map are shelteres. Some are schools, but others are churches that would welcome your donations of food, clothing, money, etc. You could Google the church's name and location, and their contact info would come up. Then you could call the church or check their web site to see how to get your items to them. The church closest to me that is acting as a shelter is New Song Church, in Oceanside. Their web site is www.newsongchurch.com. They have a link set up that gives information about what they need. They have over 250 people there, and I'm sure that they wil have more.

I live in between Los Angeles and San Diego and the very best way to help is to donate to the American Red Cross and designate it for the survivors of the California wildfires. Money is the best way to help right now, giving the necessary funds to provide food and things to those people who now have nothing. Thanks, America, for your love and concern. Please pray for us because as of tonight the firest are still raging uncontrollably.

I live in Orange County and we're surrounded by fire. It seems there's not many places to escape the fires. Southern California is under attack by flames. My family is in San Diego County and have been evacuated with their horses and dogs. A lot of people we know have lost their homes. I think more people aren't posting because they have been evacuated and can't get on the internet. The power is out everywhere. I was able to to get on yahoo and see all of the wonderful comments posted. I know So Cal residents would appreciate any help possible. If you donate to the red cross I truly believe that it will make it to us. I'm asking for your prayers... please, please pray for rain! That's what we need most... we only have 8% humidity and it's creating more fires. Thank you!

About NOKR:

The Next Of Kin Registry (NOKR) was established as a FREE tool for daily emergencies and national disasters. NOKR is an emergency contact system to help if you or your family member is missing, injured or deceased. NOKR provides the public a free proactive service to store emergency contacts, next of kin and vital medical information that would be critical to emergency response agencies. Stored information is only accessible via a secure area that is only accessible by emergency public trust agencies that have registered with NOKR.

NOKR encourages every township, county, municipality, city, state and nation to take ownership of the NOKR. This resource belongs to you, your citizens and to your emergency agencies. Take the NOKR registration forms and add your own identifying symbols.

NOKR is a humanitarian organization. As part of our mission to society NOKR has created a trusted safeguarding system for all personal emergency contacts worldwide. NOKR does not own the information we store, this information belongs to the registrants and is made available securely to registered emergency agencies during times of urgent need.

NOKR is a non-partisan; non-profit 501(c)(3) dedicated to bridging rapid emergency contact information. NOKR was established in January 2004, for daily emergency situations.

I just saw on the news that people need internet access to get in touch with families and to get money wired to them. They are basically in the dark without any communication. If anyone works for Apple, Dell, Hp or computer company,pPerhaps they can talk to their company to have a computer station set up for the victims to use.

NOTE FROM NETWORK FOR GOOD

Thank you to everyone for taking the time to post a comment and express your desire to help in someway. We have a found a couple of common questions and have provided some resources to help you answer those questions.

1. How can i offer blankets, food, generator, computers and other goods?
The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services has set up a hotline to assist in offers for non-cash donations: 1-800-750-2858

2. I would like to offer a place to stay for evacuees. How can I do this?
The online directory, Craigslist.com, has set up a forum specifically for communicating about the wildfires. You can post your offer there. Fire Forum on Craigslist: http://sandiego.craigslist.org/forums/?forumID=3123

You can also call the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services hotline at 1-800-750-2858

3. I am trying to find out if a loved one is okay. Is there a place I can try and locate them?
The Red Cross has set up a website where you can post and search for messages for and from loved ones. Red Cross’ Find People: https://disastersafe.redcross.org/

4. I would like to donate, but I want to make sure that my money goes for the victims of the fires and not something else. How do I do this?
When you are donating online reference the CA wildfires in the field labeled "Designation".

We will continue to answer your questions and provide information about ways to help.

Thank you!

I would not rebuild in California. I would head inland a bit to maybe Las Vegas or even Mesquite Nevada. but they could not pay me to live in California. Nevada has no real big earthquakes very little fire(nothing to burn in desert) No tornados, very little flooding Perfect place to live !!! I think i will head that way.

I really feel bad about the fires and the uprooted lives of the people who have lost so much. I live in Colorado and the risk of fires are severe here too. What preventive measure can everyone do to help such "every year" problems such as fire. If it is a natural fire, I can understand that this happens, But there should be better ways to make sure fires like these aren't started by us, humans. Everyone needs to do their part to prevent, but let's now help get these people back into their lives. Everyone here seems so helpfull, it's great. What more can we do?

Why can't people offer this much help to homeless folks instead of people who obviously have $$$ for their rich homes & lives, which will be reimbursed with insurance? Pathetic.

Although I feel badly to the people there to a degree, most who live there have more $$$ than we'll even see and they are no better than the homesless.

Someone posted about people having money and why should we help. My sister-in-law doesn't have "$$$" and my brother-in-law is working with the military out of the country. She had to leave their apartment and go stay with another family member. Her brother who has a wife and small child lost everything (his house burned). And his workplace burned. I am at this point trying to get in touch with them but have had no luck. I want to try to help them.

My 8 year old son was doing a report on the California Fires. He saw a picture of several people in a shelter with their children, and began to cry. He said he wanted to help them, and decided to do just that. He boxed up most of his toys and clothes to donate. I called Governor Schwartzenager's hotline for non-monetary donations. They said that the Salvation Army would take the items over. When I called the number given by the hotline for the Salvation Army they said that they would also, but I had to call the local office to arrange a pickup. This was on Friday and after the local business hours. I told my son he could donate, and he began to contact churches in the area, and even went door to door asking for donations. He has collected quite a large amount. (There is a picture of him with some of the donations at this link. "http://cpvonline.org/pics/1.jpg )
Now however, when I contacted the Salvation Army, they said they would not pick up the donations. They said that California was not taking that type of donation any longer. and even if they did, they would not take it over. This is not the message I received earlier. I called the hotline back again and they said to try Goodwill, That the Goodwill in the area was handling those types of donations. I have no response from them either as of yet. Please help! I do not want to squelch my son's zeal for generosity. He is only 8 and will not understand how with so many people who are now homeless, how his things are not needed. Frankly, I do not understand either. Does anyone know of a way to get thiese things to California?
